What are the limits of your digital restoration service?
There are a few limitations that you should be aware of:
- An
out of focus original image can't be made sharper than the
original, and excessive enlargement will intensify poor
focus. "Apparent" sharpness can sometimes be improved
through the use of contrast adjustments and sharpening filters.
- If
critical information is missing, such as a person's face,
it can't be restored, unless we have another (very) similar
photo that we can usefor "replacement".
- Restoring
color to a faded original will come close, but not exactly
the same as the original color.
What
happens to my original photographs?
Your original photos are scanned once, at the beginning of
the restoration process. They are then stored in their original
shipping packages until the project is finished. If we need
to refer to them for critical detail or color, we place them
in an archival mylar sleeve or handle them using cotton gloves.
All restoration work is done to the digital file - your originals
aren't modified in any way.
How do I send my photos?
Send your photos preferably in an envelope and protect your
photos by inserting a hard 'card board' like structure inside.
This will protect them from bending while in transit.
Send
them to:
Webeyezed.com
662 Delaware Avenue
Roebling, NJ 08554
Webeyezed.com will not be responsible, in any way,
for lost or damaged photographic material sent to us.
What
if I don't really want to send my original photographs?
Because the scanning process is so critical to the final
result of the digital process, we prefer to manage it with
our own system. There is another alternative. If you have
a good scanner, and are able to send large files (cable modem
or DSL) we can accept your scan by e-mail
I don't see any reference to what I want on your site.
Are you capable of more?
Webeyezed.com is capable of many different services.
E-mail us with your request and
we will see if we can fulfill your request.
Can
you work on photographs made by professional photographers?
U.S. law prohibits the copying of any copyright work,
including photographs. More recent photographs (since March
1, 1989) are copyrighted by a simple printed name of the studio
or photographer anywhere on the photo. Prior to that date,
a copyright symbol, ©, must appear on the photo. Antique
photographs are usually not a problem, since the originator
is no longer in business.
Webeyezed.com
will not knowingly reproduce any work that has been copyrighted
or protected in any way by the owner of the rights to that
photograph.
How long does the restoration process take?
Most projects will be ready for on-line approval within
one week of receiving the original photos. Printing and shipping
time will depend on your preferences. We can expedite your
restoration if you let us know your deadline when ordering.
My original is really faded. Can it be brought back?
Both color prints and old black and white or daguerreotypes
can fade so badly that you can barely see the image. With
the right combination of scanning and image enhancement, we
can sometimes work miracles in restoring the digital photograph.
We have also resorted to computer colorizing where the photo
was too faded.
My original is really dark. Can it be brought back?
Usually photographs will darken with age and poor storage
conditions. We can lighten these with the same kind of scanning
and image enhancement techniques used for faded originals.
My original has severe staining. Can it be removed?
We can remove the stain on the digital restoration, but
not the original photograph. Since the location of the staining
is critical to the restoration process, we need to see the
original for an accurate quote.
My original is stuck to the glass in the frame. What should
I do?
Unless removing the photo would result in only minor (non-critical
image) damage, it is best to send us the framed photo, and
we can scan through the glass. Shipping without damage is
key here, and packaging is best done by a specialty company,
such as 'Mail Boxes, Etc'. Be sure to insure your package,
since we can't be responsible for damage in shipment. We will
use the same outlet and insurance for returning the package.
How can I prevent your restoration from fading?
Our internal printing process currently uses HP jet printers,
which have the life expectancy of a color photographic print.
The following steps should be taken:
- Store
prints in an album: They will last longer than framed photos,
but avoid albums with self-stick "magnetic" pages
and PVC plastic covers.
- Slip
the prints you want to display in frames under glass (preferably
with an anti-UV coating). Don't leave them exposed to open
air.
- Put
an acid-free mat between the frame and the photo to prevent
your prints from sticking to the glass or plastic over time.
- Keep
prints out of direct sunlight and humid rooms (such as bathrooms
and basements), and away from intense heat (don't keep them
in attics or kitchens or near heaters).
